The awning above the multicultural centre features 54 languages and 278 words about home, community, belonging, and celebration. The words themselves fade in and out of the sky and the silhouettes, peeking in and out of the design, some triggering recognition, others curiosity. The background of blue sky and clouds refers to Lethbridge’s skies and memorable weather. The silhouettes are intentionally devoid of identifying characteristics so that they may represent a multitude of peoples.
The artist recognizes that it would be impossible to represent all of Earth’s 7,000 languages in this work. But hopes that the artwork provides a moment of connection and belonging.
