Signal

Douglas Senft,

2012

Signal was proposed to the City of Lethbridge in response to a call which invited artists to participate in a two stage public art competition. As the winning submission, Douglas Senft received a commission to create and install a public art work on the site of a new City of Lethbridge Fire Hall.

Caught as if by the wind coming up from the Oldman River coulee, Signal twists and turns, spiraling like smoke as it rises into the air. Smoke obscures vision but also indicates fire activity. It is both beautiful in colour and form as well as deadly. It is evidence of activity, visible yet obscuring, contradictory in its nature as both signifier and signified.
