The work, Vernacular Ecology, was made from a printmaking series in which Troy Nickle collected leaves from dandelions, cottonwoods, shrubs, and trees found within Lethbridge. In this way, the work is an homage to the urban ecosystem within our city and river valley. The prints of these interesting species are familiar to us but often overlooked and ignored; yet they each behold incredible beauty. It is Nickle’s intention to bring the beauty of these species to the forefront of our experiences and interrupt our daily momentum enough to allow us to stop and reflect on our natural world and perhaps question our role in it.
